Giving To The Goats
San Clemente Island Goat Seed Saving Project Save The Date-May 17th, 2025
May 17th, 2025. Save this date to participate in an in-person fundraising event. At Brewery Nonic in Menomonie, WI from 12-3 PM. At this event, there will be at least two guest speakers. One is a neighboring San Clemente Island goat breeder in Stillwater, MN. And the other guest speaker is VERY special and I will announce them later.
At this event, you can meet a number of these critically endangered goats in person. Take a picture with some of your favorites, and learn about why livestock and poultry breeds are endangered how many go extinct, and why it is important to conserve these valuable genetics.
This is a multi-tiered fundraising project. The first objective is to collect semen from ten San Clemente Island bucks, most of which are particularly valuable as they are part of the Tepper Line Preservation Project. But many of these goats also display incredibly rare color variations. There is only a very small handful of this representation left in the United States as many have disappeared and died out.
The first tier is to raise at least $3,200.00 to collect semen. Then to donate at least half of it to the USDA for long-term storage. And second to store in a facility that will allow other San Clemente Island goat breeders to purchase semen to diversify current herds using artificial insemination (AI) on their does.
The second tier is to work with a long-time San Clemente Island goat breeder to obtain some of her high Tepper line San Clemente Island goats. This will allow me to continue not only preserving but growing this rare line. With hopes to include more breeders in Tepper Line breeding in the future. This may cost around $4,000.00 to include safe transport.
Consider playing a major role in the San Clemente Island Goat Seed Saving Project. With a minimum goal to raise just over $3,200 and the ultimate goal to raise just over $7,200. You can donate toward the semen collection project or the Tepper Line acquisition project. And specify if you would like money to go toward a particular project. Special Projects
Below are a list of projects that can be done with the San Clemente Island goats at the EB Ranch Farmstead. These projects are still in a rough draft stage. Details will be shared as these projects become more organized. Many of these projects revolve around the Tepper Line of the San Clemente Island goat breed. And further study and preservation of two very rare color variations found at the EB Ranch Farmstead.
Collection and storage of genetic material. Both semen and fertilized eggs. And making these genetic materials available to more SCI goat breeders.
Further research into cloning possibilities.
A fund for dedicated Tepper Line SCI goat breeders. Helping new breeders pay for Tepper Line SCI goats.
Collection of DNA and helping fund the further study of the very rare “self-black” and cream and black color variations of the SCI goat breed.
Further research into the viability of cashmere in the SCI goat breed. Specifically with the Tepper Line.
